St. Mary's School of Medford

About Us

Established in 1865, St. Mary’s School is the premiere academic institution in the region and provides a community in which intellectual curiosity and academic excellence thrive. St. Mary’s School combines a traditional college preparatory curriculum with increasingly project-based classrooms. With over 200 courses to choose from (see selections HERE), our students have the opportunity to build a schedule that ignites their passions and allows them to be uniquely engaged and challenged. No two students have the same schedule! St. Mary’s School offers grades 5 – 12 and serves 500 students from around the world.

We are located in beautiful Southern Oregon – a region that experiences four mild seasons and offers year-round outdoor activities and local amenities such as the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival. St. Mary’s School inspires all students to discover their talents in a uniquely responsive, Catholic environment.

Academic research, critical thinking, and analytical writing are valued here. Juniors complete a major research project, exploring a topic of their choice, in a 12-20 page paper following the Chicago style. They then defend their paper to a faculty panel who has blind graded the paper.

International Program – We host international students this year from Argentina, Belgium, Britain, China, Denmark, Indonesia, Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. The majority live in our dorm and the others have homestays. Discover more about our international program click here.

Mod Abroad
In the third mod, a group of students takes courses in social studies, cultural studies, and literature to prepare them for two weeks of learning abroad.

Service Learning
Service learning is at the heart of our school. Our students regularly invest over 15,000 hours in meaningful community service each year. Students must serve 25 hours each year in grades 9-11. Seniors serve without credit.

Senior Project
Seniors complete a capstone project, reflecting on the school’s mission and the value of service as related to a global issue. They give a 10-15-minute formal, public presentation to a panel of community members, alumni, board members, and faculty.

70% of our students play a sport. Our teams consistently rank at the top in the state, with multiple students signing with collegiate teams most years. We are a small, yet mighty, bunch of athletes earning numerous accolades.

We have very competitive try-outs for Math Team and Brain Bowl. Our three math teams consistently score at the top of the league, with multiple students never dropping even a single point in competition. Our Brain Bowl Team is equally stellar in the region. Our Robotics teams have their own lab, raise money for other teams in the region, and have been to FTC Worlds three times in the last 6 years, as well as ranking consistently high in state. We have almost 40 student clubs, ranging from Cacti & Succulents to Nanowrimo, and the Outdoor Club to a Dr. Who club. Students are required to join a club, but may switch each mod. They initiate new clubs themselves.
