Idyllwild Arts Academy

About Us

Imagine a high school that has mastered the art of arts education. Idyllwild Arts Academy, a closeknit, working community of students and teachers offers a disciplined college preparatory program for grades 9-12 and post-graduates-along with world-class training in Creative Writing, Dance, Moving Pictures, InterArts/Fashion Design, Music, Theatre, and Visual Art. Idyllwild Arts students are sought out by the top conservatories and universities in the nation and abroad. The campus, situated on 205-forested acres (85 hectares) in the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains in Southern California, is a safe and inspiring setting for young students and artists.

The Visual Art Department:
The Visual Art department offers a wide range of courses that promote a hands-on, experiential approach that develops a sensitivity and familiarity with materials and methods. Students are given both the formal and conceptual training to expand their visual literacy. Personal attention from a diverse and professional faculty helps the students gain greater confidence with their work and ideas.

Idyllwild’s internationally recognized Music program prepares talented young musicians from around the world for a range of successful music careers – and for admission to the finest colleges and conservatories in the country. The program’s performance-based curriculum provides a strong focus on individualized attention with private instruction from the finest teachers and performers in Southern California. Nearby Los Angeles provides easy access to performances by the world’s great artists.

The Dance program is designed to provide students with the technical and artistic versatility required to advance in the professional dance world. Therefore all Dance majors study all forms of dance. Ballet plays a crucial role in the education a Dance major receives at the Arts Academy.

The Theatre Department offers concentrated, pre-professional training in acting, musical theatre, and theatrical design/production. Actor training is Stanislavski based and incorporates techniques to guide students toward greater self-awareness and knowledge of their own potential. It affords students the opportunity to experience disciplined training similar to conservatory theatre programs at the college level.

Moving Pictures:
More than any single art form, the motion picture is an amalgam of all the arts – which makes Idyllwild Arts a unique environment for the study of film. In addition to the regular course work, special workshops and master classes are periodically held with top professionals in areas such as producing, directing, screenwriting, production design, cinematography, editing, post sound and film scoring.

Creative Writing:
The Writers Workshop is designed to nurture and challenge high school students interested in developing as poets, fiction writers, playwrights, screenwriters, and essayists. The Workshop prepares its participants to pursue writing and related fields in college and beyond.

InterArts/Fashion Design:
The InterArts/Fashion Design Department provides a platform for art exploration. Not only do you explore courses in two or more arts majors, but you have core courses in artistic habits and introductory aesthetics as well as production skills, so that when you do decide which major is right for you, you have the background skills to be a success. InterArts also allows students to focus in fashion design.
