Located in Lake Forest, Ill., Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic day and boarding college-preparatory high school for young women in grades nine through twelve that promotes academic, artistic and athletic excellence along with global awareness, social responsibility and strong faith.
Woodlands Academy is part of a worldwide network of Sacred Heart Schools that spans the United States and 40 other countries. The schools are bound together by the same five goals:
- A personal and active faith in God
- A deep respect for intellectual values
- A social awareness which impels to action
- The building of community as a Christian value
- Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom
The present enrollment is drawn from 34 communities in the greater Chicago area as well as from several other states and international countries including China, Mexico, Malaysia, Poland, Philippines, Guatemala, England and Belgium.
Woodlands Academy has a long tradition of welcoming young women from all over the world as students. Its international student program provides the academic support and social opportunities that help the students make lifelong friends and earn a place at a U.S. college or university upon graduating. Living in the boarding school, students meet other young women with whom they share companionship, meals, outings and activities.
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Woodlands Academy provides a foundation for English language learners to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. In addition to using current textbooks supporting best practices in English language instruction, the students use Rosetta Stone to reinforce the speaking and grammatical fluency that is taught in class.
Students may participate in an exchange program among the network of Sacred Heart schools. Students apply for acceptance into this program, and have the opportunity to experience school life for a quarter or a semester at one of the other Sacred Heart schools in the United States.
The many clubs, sports and musical groups at Woodlands Academy offer students with special interests the opportunity to develop their talents and grow in their self-confidence.
In order to foster a sense of selfless service to others, Woodlands Academy commits itself to instilling a social awareness which impels the student to action. Students must complete 70 hours of community service work for which they may not receive financial remuneration.
Graduating women of courage, confidence and compassion is Woodlands Academy’s four-year goal. The school is very much about educating young women to be resilient.
Since its founding, Woodlands Academy has been committed to having a socio-economically diverse student population by offering financial aid to qualified students who show evidence of need. These grants are used to offset tuition and do not require repayment.
