About Us

The Winchendon School, a coeducational multicultural community, provides college-bound students of good character and promise with the essential study skills and learning strategies that propel each student to achieve academic success.

  • Located in the small, safe town of Winchendon, one hour north of Boston, Massachusetts, on a hilltop surrounded by our 18-hole Donald Ross-designed golf course, overlooking Mt. Monadnock in New Hampshire

The focus is on the acquisition of essential study skills and learning strategies, and oral and written communication skills, with challenging college-preparatory course work woven in. Teachers are trained to teach the skills to students, so they can learn any college subject.

Students are taught Cornell master note-taking, SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Write, Review), Bloom’s Taxonomy (for development of critical thinking skills), reading comprehension, writing competency, public speaking, effective research techniques, application of technology, integrated math and science for lower level pre-algebra and algebra classes, and project-based learning.

Students receive real-time written feedback in the form of daily slips from each teacher. Students and parents receive online weekly written reports with effort marks, a grade for each course, and a bi-weekly progress report from each teacher.

A Global Dynamics (GD) course has been created for all students to develop a working knowledge of countries and cultures around the world. It is a blended English and history course earning two credits. Areas studied are: GD I: Asia, GD II: Africa and the Middle East; GD III: United States; GD IV: Europe and Latin America.

Advanced Placement (AP) tests can be taken in any course we offer. Advanced level courses include AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, , AP Literature and Composition, AP U.S. Government, Expository Writing, Forensic Science, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, Coding, Spanish and French through Level 5. Our outstanding fine arts’ offerings include painting, drawing, ceramics, and advanced art portfolio development.

Winchendon offers competitive sports (Fall – cross-country running, soccer, horseback riding, volleyball; Winter – basketball, hockey); Spring – baseball, golf, lacrosse, softball, tennis, triathalon, ultimate frisbee); intramural sports (aerobics, badminton, swimming, skiing and snowboarding, weight-training and conditioning, golf, tennis); clubs (Model UN, Debate, Learn to Skate, Global Buddies, etc.); and arts (digital media, photography, yearbook, painting, drawing, singing, dance, band, and music lessons).

Our college acceptances are excellent, and 99% of our graduates go to four-year colleges and universities.
