About Us

Founded in 1811, Thornton Academy is an independent day and boarding school serving students in grades 6 through 12. At the heart of Thornton Academy’s vision for the 21st century is the image of the student as a lifelong learner who possesses the skills and attitudes necessary for this desirable and attainable goal. TA offers a challenging and invigorating curriculum that includes 140 comprehensive offerings in performing and fine arts, technology and language, business and economics, including diverse extracurricular activities at Thornton’s 30 hectares open campus help to create a distinctive academic experience.

250 courses in 8 disciplines: 24 AP classes, 9 foreign languages (including: Arabic, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Latin, Ancient Greek, Spanish, French, German, Russian), online classes, “X Block” classes, etc.

New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), MAIS (Maine Association of Independent Schools), NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools), ISANNE (Independent School Association of Northern New England) Alumni: 10,000 worldwide, led by an active alumni council.

10 buildings set on 80 acres (30 hectares) in the coastal town of Saco, Maine. Facilities include classroom buildings, theater, arts wing, television studio, student and faculty residences, athletic stadium with a track and numerous playing fields.

Over 50 additional elective courses include Television Production, Poetry, Jazz Band and Studies, Journalism, Poetry, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Orchestra, Film Studies, Psychology, Political Science, Trigonometry, Orchestra, Drawing and many more.

Honors/Advanced Placement Classes
24 AP classes and 40+ honors classes provide opportunities for academic acceleration and advancement (AP, honors and independent study).

15 miles from Portland, Maine, and 90 minutes from Boston. Accessible by interstate highway or Amtrak train—local station is less than1 mile from campus.  Easy access to three major airports—90 minutes to either Boston’s Logan Airport or Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in Manchester, N.H.; 15 minutes to the International Jetport in Portland.
