Stoneleigh-Burnham School

About Us

Stoneleigh-Burnham School, founded in 1869, is a girls’ boarding and day school nestled in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of western Massachusetts. Educating girls grades 7-12 and post-graduate on its 100-acre campus, the school inspires its students to value intellectual curiosity, to embrace diversity, and to act with integrity. Stoneleigh-Burnham is the only girls’ school in New England to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.

Stoneleigh-Burnham offers an array of challenging academic courses that launch students into focused study and leadership to prepare them for college and beyond. With small class sizes and a research-based curriculum, Stoneleigh-Burnham School provides its students with a safe and inclusive environment that encourages self-discovery, adventurousness, and strong academic pursuit. Passionately committed to its multi-cultural environment, Stoneleigh-Burnham School is proud of its rich diversity of students hailing from nearly twenty countries around the world.

Stoneleigh-Burnham offers dynamic opportunities outside the classroom for a well-rounded educational experience that challenges each student to develop confidence and to discover her best self. These include nationally recognized equestrian, debate, and performing arts programs, in addition to athletics, international travel opportunities, community service, and numerous clubs and after-school activities.

Learning to speak with confidence and clarity lies at the heart of the Stoneleigh-Burnham experience and is the mark of a Stoneleigh-Burnham girl. From our world-class debate and public speaking program to our weekly Housemeetings, to our student government organization, and our tenth grade rhetoric course, our students have unlimited opportunities to explore their opinions, engage their voices, develop resiliency, and practice self-advocacy.

The school’s equestrian center is located on campus, which means girls can walk from their classes and dorm rooms directly to the barn. Licensed coaches provide personalized instruction tailored to all abilities. Our four-time National Champion IEA team competes at both the middle and high school levels within the largest zone in the country. Stoneleigh-Burnham is the only secondary school in the United States to offer British Horse Society International Certification.

Our progressive middle school offers a student-centered curriculum that prioritizes individual students’ needs and growth. Arts, languages, athletics, community service, advisory, and student government are woven into the curriculum, allowing our middle school students to cultivate an understanding of the ways knowledge connects across disciplines.

Stoneleigh-Burnham is proud to be a girls’ school. Based on research that shows connectedness, competence, and confidence are the core elements of self-esteem in girls, our progressive curriculum cultivates in each girl an appreciation for all aspects of a liberal arts education and stretches her to understand the multi-sensory, collaborative process by which she learns about herself and her world.

Girls develop best when they are in a community that knows them and where they feel connected. With its history of fostering the development of strong female identities, its safe and inclusive multi-cultural environment, and its dedication to understanding how girls best learn and grow, Stoneleigh-Burnham School guides emerging women to become active agents of their own destiny.
