San Domenico School
At San Domenico, we believe that what students do with their education is as important as their academic performance. We encourage our students to not just study, but also to reflect on their learning, find their purpose, and celebrate in community, because an exceptional education, where values and academics join together, creates more than just great students – it develops great people. Our innovative academic curriculum emphasizes effort, resilience, persistence, and continuous growth to better inspire and equip students for excellence both in school and life.
Located on 515 acres, San Domenico’s campus is just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The first independent school in California, San Domenico’s programs produces inspired, successful young people who think critically and act with integrity. Our wooded, solar powered campus features a state-of-the art athletic center, a nationally acclaimed music conservatory, visual arts facilities, equestrian center, six tennis courts, a pool, and a one-acre organic garden. We are proud of our sustainability efforts and were recognized in 2014 as a Green Ribbon School by the US Department of Education. Projected opening enrollment for 2014 is 185 high school students; approximately half are boarding students and of those, two-thirds are international students. San Domenico will be extending coeducation into the high school in the fall of 2015. With the addition of boys, our enrollment will grow to 320 with 120 of those being boarding students. The high school offers a rigorous college preparatory program that includes a full complement of AP and Honors classes as well as co-curricular offerings including athletics, robotics, visual and performing arts, service, social justice, and environmental sustainability. Our Dominican values of study, reflection, service and community remain at the center of all we do at San Domenico. San Domenico’s high school has 25 faculty members, 20 of whom hold advanced degrees.
Some highlights of our program include:
The Music Conservatory: Advanced string musicians enrolled in the Virtuoso Program pursue pre-professional music training in the context of a college preparatory school. Students in the program are members of an orchestra and string quartet, and the orchestra has won the National Orchestra Festival Competition three times.
Mini Courses: We offer many interesting topics that do not require yearlong classes. Minis are offered as semester-long, once a week sessions and have included forensic science, web design, game development, human rights and politics, and more!
Equestrian Program: With three riding instructors and several assistants, the boarding stables on campus include top-notch horse care, a large jumping area, two covered arenas, and up to 15 horses. Students can board their horse or ride ours. San Domenico is a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association, winning several Zone 10 competition finals.
Spring Discovery: Each spring, the entire school takes time to learn experientially through grade specific journeys of discovery that allows the students to better understand themselves, their classmates and the world they live in.
