Oregon Episcopal School

About Us

Oregon Episcopal School was founded in 1869 and today is a thriving independent, coeducational, college preparatory school serving more than 800 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12. A boarding program is available to students in grades 9 through 12. OES is located on a 59-acre wooded campus just 15 minutes from downtown Portland, an hour from the spectacular Cascade Mountains, and less than two hours from the Oregon Coast. OES offers a true liberal arts curriculum ranging from science and mathematics to the humanities and the arts.

OES delivers an enriched, dynamic, and engaging academic program that encourages the deeper challenges of intellectual risk-taking, healthy skepticism, informed discussion and imaginative research. A look into our classrooms shows students actively and creatively engaged in the learning process–whether reading original source documents to untangle the stories of the past or conducting independent scientific research and performing laboratory experiments, allowing students to experience first-hand the theory behind the scientific method or performing the work of Shakespeare on stage.

OES faculty are among the finest in their fields and are recruited nationwide. Our teachers are committed to an intensely personal style of education, focusing on the academic and emotional well-being of each student, aided by a student teacher ratio of 7:1. This creates an atmosphere where student/teacher friendships are common and trust is the norm. These trusting relationships allow faculty to play a powerful role in moving students toward their passions as they come to know themselves as competent young adults.

Eighty percent of Upper School students at OES play at least one competitive sport. Because OES recognizes the opportunities for growth inherent in athletic pursuits, we employ a no-cut policy; there is a team for every level of experience and skill, emphasizing the educational value of striving for excellence, teamwork, and the challenge of competition.

The curriculum at OES provides its students with a thorough preparation for college. Our college counselors begin working individually with students during their junior year to prepare for the college admissions process. More than 80 college representatives visit the campus each year, and counselors help students and their parents establish priorities, gather information, and encourage them to visit colleges that are a good match.

Approximately 60 boarding students come to OES from Western states and from as far away as Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Residents of the OES dorm form a close-knit community. Ten dorm parents live on campus and guide the students in the development of a healthy, vibrant community. The powerful bonds students form in the dorms become lifetime friendships beyond high school.

Oregon Episcopal School is honored to provide a supportive, challenging, exciting, caring, and well-rounded experience for our students. The OES community takes great pride in its long tradition of providing an excellent education for our students, as we prepare them to step out into the world with confidence and competence.
