Miss Porter’s School

About Us

Founded in 1843 by lifelong scholar and educator, Sarah Porter, Miss Porter’s School is a college preparatory boarding and day school for girls in grades nine through 12.
Located in the center of Farmington, Conn., Porter’s offers a diverse high school experience with 315 students hailing from 26 states and representing 19 countries. The school educates young women to become informed, bold, resourceful and ethical global citizens who will shape a changing world.

A respected leader in preparing young women for college, Porter’s provides students with a rigorous and excellent liberal arts education within a community committed to mutual respect and high standards of achievement. Students are challenged to think and work collaboratively and creatively, to make connections among disciplines, and to apply knowledge to increasingly complex problems. Students are taught to think critically and analytically, communicate authentically, and to develop the strategies necessary to become competent, confident, and compassionate leaders in a global environment. All graduates earn acceptance into four-year colleges and universities.

The school’s location allows students to enjoy the charm of Farmington, while providing easy access to Hartford, New York and Boston for social, cultural, and academic events. The picturesque, 50-acre campus is close to village stores and within a short walk of the Farmington River.

The school’s governing board is composed of 30 trustees, both men and women, 22 of whom are alumnae. The Annual Fund provides 11~percent of the operating budget each year.

Miss Porter’s School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. It is a member of the National Coalition of Girl’s Schools, the Association of Boarding Schools, the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, and the Cum Laude Society.
