Lyndon Institute

About Us

The School: Lyndon Institute is an independent, co-educational secondary school with over 550 students for grades 9-12. It is located in the historic and scenic northeast region of Vermont, one of the most beautiful locations in the United States. Celebrating its 150th year in 2016, LI boasts 34 buildings that expand across 150 acres. Our campus includes the 280 acre Binney Woods Forest that is used for environmental education, the John L. Norris Jr. Center for the Arts, the 600-seat Auditorium, the Alumni Gym, and the John H. Elliott Memorial Library and Monahan Academic Commons.

The Teachers: At Lyndon Institute, we work hard to foster responsible citizens that become life-long learners and leaders academically, emotionally, and physically. By allowing opportunities for personal involvement, decision-making, and responsibility in and for their learning, along with high expectations and individual support by capable and committed staff based on solid research, we are accomplishing that goal.

LI’s faculty is comprised of noted professionals including published authors, noted artists, adjunct college professors, and others active in their professional fields. Our Faculty emphasizes personal attention and inquiry-based learning with a productive and supportive student-to-teacher ratio of 9:1. They focus on the individual talents of each student providing outstanding preparation for school, college, career and life.

The Classes: The comprehensive 150-course curriculum specializes in core and honors academics (14 AP® Courses), fine and performing arts, and career sciences. Four college level engineering courses, four levels of ESOL, five languages and technical classes featuring Automotive Technology, Welding, LNA/Medical Terminology, Precision Machining, and Health and Wellness are offered. LI is the recipient of the 2012-2013 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement®.

The Arts: Over 22 courses in fine and performing arts are offered for dance, music, drama, and fine art. LI is home to the annual Vermont Dance Festival, now in its 14th year, an event that is renowned throughout New England.

Campus Life: Our learning community is a diverse mix of students from 16 countries, several U.S. States and over 20 area towns and villages. Boarding students reside in six dorms on campus in single or double rooms well-equipped with lounges and game rooms. A wide range of over 60 extracurricular clubs and activities and 29 interscholastic sports provides students the opportunity to discover, explore, design and create. The campus is located 5 minutes from Burke Mountain, an international ski resort and Kingdom Trails, the largest mountain biking trail system on the east coast. Our dorm parent program provides the structure and support necessary to assist our boarding students and their families as they transition to life on campus.

After LI: 90% of our graduates are accepted to America’s “Top 100” colleges and universities including, but not limited to, Dartmouth College, Middlebury, Bard, Emerson, Boston College, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Universities of Vermont, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Our Career and College Center works with students early in their academic career to assist with post-graduate plans. This includes assistance with a dual-enrollment program offering students the opportunity to earn college credit or professional certifications while still in high school.

The Bottom Line: Lyndon Institute is large enough to offer a wide variety of academic, artistic and athletic opportunities, but small enough to support and nourish the passions of the individual student.
