Leysin American School

About Us

Mission Statement:
“Developing innovative, compassionate and responsible citizens of the world”
Located in picturesque Leysin, facing the panorama of the Southern Alps, LAS has both a strong academic ethos and an inspirational setting! The school combines an American educational philosophy with the rigor of a European educational system. Our school has 340 students from over 55 different nationalities. We offer schooling from Grade 8 to Postgraduate. We are proud of the fact that we were the first American boarding school in Switzerland to offer the International Baccalaureate diploma. In addition we offer a comprehensive US university preparatory curriculum with courses in all major subjects. For non-native English speakers our integrated English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) program promotes academic and linguistic growth through intensive work in reading, writing, listening comprehension and conversational English.

At LAS we strongly believe in the relationship between parents, students and ourselves and utilize internet-based systems which make detailed academic and non-academic information accessible to parents interested in remaining closely involved with their child’s education.

To complement our academic curriculum, our students enjoy an extra-curricular program which features exciting recreational activities, extensive cultural travel and fine art courses.  Our boarding community provides a stable, caring and supportive family-like environment. Faculty members who also live in the dormitories believe in student-centered education, where close relationships lead to each student achieving his or her potential.

At LAS we strive to provide the best environment in which our students can excel. We have three full time professional college counselors who are there to assist our students. In addition we offer professional SAT and IELTS Preparatory Courses at our campus. 100% of our graduates continue education at colleges and universities. 68% of our graduates have enrolled in the top 100 universities (Barron’s Guide). This year 29 of our graduating students got accepted into Barron’s List of the Most Competitive Colleges in the US.  Examples of acceptances include Stanford, Barnard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, John Hopkins, Amherst, NYU, Tufts and Williams among many others.  LAS students were also accepted into top Canadian Universities such as McGill, University of Toronto, Queen’s and University of British Columbia. Alex Krakoski, who recently graduated from LAS has won a full scholarship to study at Cornell. He said “LAS provided me with a home where I could revel in astrophysics, industrial chemistry and French in the morning and glide across powdery slopes in the afternoon. Through befriending people from all over the world, every waking moment provided valuable personal insight into world cultures. Overall, LAS provided me with the best high school experience I could ever imagine. Consequently, I am prepared to face any educational challenge that I may undertake at Cornell University.”

LAS also offer summer camps called Summer in Switzerland (SIS) which is an educational and recreational program for young people ages eight to
18. SIS is different from many other summer programs in that we offer an extensive repertoire of courses that students can choose from. Courses range from drama, art, guitar and voice lessons to SAT preparation, leadership, computer gaming and digital art classes.
