Darrow School

About Us

Darrow School, founded in 1932, is a boarding and day school for grades 9-12 offering a comprehensive, hands-on, college-preparatory curriculum in a supportive environment.

A low student-to-teacher ratio allows for a high level of individual attention, and an average class size of nine students affords all students the opportunity to participate in the learning process actively. Darrow offers a dynamic and challenging academic environment for our students and engages in them in classroom settings that emphasize debate, discussion, and project work.

Signature Programs: Our extensive Sustainability Initiatives are incorporated into academic work, campus grounds and facilities, and daily life activities. Hands-to-Work is our unique service program by which students work together to gain practical skills and serve the community each week. Spring Term is our weeklong experiential learning travel program, at the end of spring exams, for which the world is our classroom!

Built on the site of an original Shaker settlement, Historic buildings include the Tannery, where school meetings and other events take place, and the retrofitted Meeting House, built in 1824, which is home to our library. Modern buildings include the 12,000-square-foot Joline Arts Center, which houses studios for painting, drawing, ceramics, and woodworking, a photography lab, a multimedia graphics lab, and gallery space. The Samson Environmental Center, powered by renewable energy, and Living Machine natural wastewater treatment facility is our sustainability showpieces.

Internationally recognized for our Arts curriculum- through classes, co-curricular programming, special events, and student interest groups, Darrow students find a variety of ways to get involved with artistic enterprises in theater, music, and the visual arts. We offer both a great arts foundation and special offerings too, including filmmaking, furniture design, medieval revelry, and Shaker-style handicrafts.

The athletic program at Darrow focuses on personal skill development in a supportive environment, whether on a competitive sports team or as a recreational opportunity. Darrow School athletics are dedicated to encouraging enjoyable sporting experiences and exemplary sportsmanship standards for team players and individual athletes alike. Darrow teams play to win, but we also believe in the positive effects of competition and appreciate the cultivation of resilience in our student-athletes. Sports competitions also afford our athletes important leadership opportunities on the field and within our school community. Darrow students can choose between 9 competitive sports options each year and a wide range of recreational opportunities like yoga and Outdoor Education.

Darrow has been recognized by NAIS as a “Leading Edge Honoree” for curriculum innovation. Darrow continues to embrace the Shaker legacy of sustainability and stewardship in its unique living and learning environment and is proud to be celebrating more than 80 years of inspiring confidence for success in college and life.
