Bryanston not only provides pupils with a distinctive educational experience but also a warm, welcoming and friendly community. A broad curriculum and one-to-one attention help pupils to identify academic and co-curricular areas where they can excel and use their strengths to develop areas they find more challenging. Our pupil body is diverse and we recognize each child has their talents and interests and the school helps children identify and value their range of abilities. Throughout their time pupils also learn to appreciate and value the contribution of others as well as the difference their contribution can make. There are many opportunities to get involved and work together towards a common goal in the classroom, on the sports field, in the creative arts and through service to the school and broader community. Boarding engenders independence in a safe environment and gives the pupils the time to get fully involved in the full range of activities on offer and develop lasting relationships with friends and teachers. Bryanston’s one-to-one approach ensures all pupils have a member of staff they can turn to for advice and support at any time. Individual attention is at the very heart of Bryanston’s educational philosophy.

In addition to timetabled classes, teachers see pupils individually for work review conferences, called ‘correction periods.’ This gives pupils the opportunity to test their grasp of a subject, clarify aspects they might not fully understand and pursue a personal interest in a subject. This positive approach to independent learning is nurtured from a pupil’s very first day at Bryanston. Throughout their time here they are supported in building academic confidence, based on strong organizational skills, the bravery to think creatively and take risks when solving problems, and the flexibility of thought required to benefit from a variety of teaching styles. Responsibility for developing a range of powerful learning tools across all subjects lies with the pupil’s personal, academic tutor.

Pupils meet with their tutors on a one-to-one basis at least once a week. The emphasis of these tutorials will depend on the individual pupil’s needs and stage of development, and the overarching aim is to monitor progress and ensure that, as the child moves through the school, they are developing the skills and attributes that will help them to flourish. The considerable emphasis the school places on the needs of the individual results in outstanding academic added value across the ability range. When measured against national standards, Bryanstonians consistently outperform expectation at GCSE, A level and the IB. Since its foundation in 1928 Bryanston has sought to develop an approach to teaching and learning that equips pupils with the skills to be resourceful, independent and creative in whatever path they choose to follow. We believe that excellent teaching should tailor an approach to optimize the learning of each. It is necessarily a bespoke process.
