Besant Hill School

About Us

For more than 70 years, Besant Hill School has been a place where the individual potential is maximized in a learning environment that affords students the opportunity to discover they’re creative, as well as their intellectual, abilities. Our emphasis remains as a college-prep school that evaluates the individual as distinct from group placement and comparison. Our motto of “Aún Aprendo” reflects our belief that life can be lived in its fullest sense through lifelong efforts towards personal development and growth. We believe we are a model for the way education should occur, where students are taught how to think, not what to think.

The Academic Program at Besant Hill School emphasizes the school motto, Aún Aprendo; I am still learning. Instilling a lifelong love of learning is the goal of our vigorous college preparatory curriculum. Our initiative “The World as Our Classroom” brings Besant Hill to the world and the world to Besant Hill and eliminates the disconnect between high school and the global community that students will enter after graduation. Students will experience ePortfolio practice, hands on learning outside of the classroom, and development of real world skills, all of which best prepares you to be a successful citizen of the world. We value and encourage creativity and the creative mindset in all classes, teaching how to think, not what to think. Academic classes, art classes, and physical education classes are all valued equally in the pursuit of educating the whole person.

With more than 30 offerings in music, performing arts, visual arts and digital arts, the arts at BHS involve the whole person and affect the whole community. Rich in artistic history, BHS has a long lineage of teachers who are professionals in the stage, film, music and visual art world in this country. Imagine being taught musical theatre by one of the stars of a national television show? Or learning guitar and jazz music from one of the area’s greatest guitarists? Or performing on stage next to an actor you saw in a commercial or movie? You get the picture. Because of our location and proximity to Los Angeles and the town of Ojai, home to many writers, actors, directors, musicians, and artists, we have a smorgasbord of guest artists.

Athletics and physical activity are integral parts of student life at Besant Hill School. Our school strives to provide meaningful athletic activities that will instill a passion for lifelong health and wellness in our students. Our competitive team sports are built on value-based coaching with an emphasis on participation, commitment, sportsmanship, and striving to do one’s best.
